Former India opener Aakash Chopra has backed Sri Lanka to reach the Asia Cup 2025 final, saying the team has the balance and depth to compete strongly in UAE conditions.
With the tournament set to begin on September 9, Chopra said Sri Lanka, led by Charith Asalanka, could very well emerge as finalists alongside defending champions India.
“They do have an all-condition kind of squad. Sri Lanka are a good team, and I will have to back them to qualify. I won’t be surprised if they play so well that they reach the final. It could be an India-Sri Lanka final,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
He praised the squad’s blend of top-order anchors like Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, attacking options such as Kamindu Mendis, and an array of all-rounders. Chopra also noted that Sri Lanka’s spin attack would be particularly valuable in UAE conditions.
“This team’s specialty is that they may not be a team full of superstars, but they can become a superstar team,” Chopra said.
Sri Lanka, placed in Group B, will face Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh in the group stage. (Newswire)
