An investigation has been launched into the removal of several signboards guiding visitors to archaeological sites in Batticaloa, Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senewi said.

Issuing a special statement, the Minister said the Department of Archaeology has been installing such signboards for many years as part of a general government project to identify and protect heritage locations.

However, an organised group has removed these signboards from four archaeological sites in the area. The incident has also been reported to the Minister of Public Security, and investigations are currently underway, he said.

The Minister stressed that legal action will be taken and that those responsible will be identified without delay. He further noted that it is becoming increasingly clear that a group with political motives is behind the act. (Newswire)
