National People’s Power (NPP) Member of Parliament Ashoka Ranwala has been arrested by police in connection with a road accident in the Sapugaskanda area, state media reported.
According to state media Dinamina, claims circulating on social media alleging that the MP was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident have been found to be false following police investigations.
State media further reported that Ranwala was admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo after the accident and is currently receiving treatment.
The accident occurred on Thursday evening (11) in the Denimulla area of Sapugaskanda and involved a head-on collision between a jeep driven by Ranwala and another motor vehicle.
A 25-year-old woman travelling in the car, her approximately six-month-old infant, and a 55-year-old elderly woman sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital. The infant was transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children for further treatment.
Police are continuing investigations into the incident. (Newswire)
