
- A naval operation seizes another consignment of narcotics in Kalpitiya Sea
During an operation carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy in the Ippanthivu sea area of Kalpitiya on the night of 05 Dec 25, naval personnel intercepted a dinghy carrying three (03) sacks suspected to contain narcotics, as well as another dinghy that had arrived to assist it, with four (04) suspects.
This morning (06 December), the Police Narcotic Bureau conducted an expert examination of the three sacks suspected to contain narcotics. The analysis confirmed the seizure of more than 63kg of crystal methamphetamine (“ice”) and over 14kg of heroin. A media briefing regarding the operation was held at the Police Narcotic Bureau, attended by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda and Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.
Speaking at the event, the Navy Commander emphasized that the “A Nation United” National Mission has left no avenue for drug smuggling. With the Tri-Forces and Police conducting intensive raids across the island under the Defence Ministry’s directives, and urged smugglers to desist.
The Navy Commander emphasized that, while the armed forces and police are engaged in relief efforts following the national disaster, all operations continue to safeguard national security. He stressed that nothing compromising security would be tolerated. He further highlighted the civic duty to protect future generations from the drug scourge, urging the public to report smuggling and usage to law enforcement. The Navy Commander also commended the media’s role in raising public awareness on this critical issue.
The dinghies, narcotics and suspects held in this operation were handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for onward legal action.
