The government has launched a new programme to convert old fuel-powered three-wheelers into electric vehicles, Minister of Science and Technology Chrishantha Abeysena announced.
He said the initiative also explores the possibility of fitting solar panels on the roofs of three-wheelers to improve energy efficiency and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
According to the Minister, converting petrol-powered three-wheelers to electric offers major advantages, allowing existing vehicles to remain in use while eliminating fuel costs. He noted that the operating cost is estimated at around Rs. 5 per kilometre, with an electric three-wheeler capable of travelling approximately 100 kilometres on a single charge. The conversion process is expected to cost about Rs. 800,000 per vehicle.
Minister Abeysena added that the National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD) has already developed a new electric three-wheeler model, and the government plans to further improve it in partnership with the private sector.
He also stated that research is currently underway to integrate solar panels into three-wheelers, enabling them to be powered partially by solar energy. If successful, the technology could prove to be a valuable long-term investment for the country, contributing to sustainable transport and reduced energy costs. (Newswire)
