There is no fuel shortage despite the implementation of the QR code system for fuel distribution, Managing Director of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Mayura Neththikumara said.

Speaking to the media, he said discussions have already been held with several countries, including Indiaand China, regarding the purchase of fuel if an urgent requirement arises in the country. He added that the discussions had been successful.

He also noted that the QR code system was introduced after authorities observed people stockpiling fuel and queues forming over the past few days.

“The QR code system was introduced as a precaution after we noticed people collecting fuel and queues forming over the past three to four days. Otherwise there is no issue with fuel. The aim is to ensure that people can obtain fuel without having to wait in queues,” he said.

He said fuel distribution under the QR code system began at 6.00 a.m. today (15). Initially, priority has been given to those who had previously obtained a QR code and have the relevant vehicle and registered mobile number with them.

Neththikumara also said that those who had obtained a QR code earlier could continue to use the same code.

Meanwhile, those without a QR code can download it through the fuel pass system website at fuelpass.gov.lk

He further said that individuals whose vehicle ownership has changed, whose mobile numbers have been updated, or who have not previously obtained a QR code can register their vehicle through the “vehicle registration” section of the website to obtain a QR code. The vehicle registration section of the website is expected to be updated within about an hour.

The CPC Managing Director said that from today fuel cannot be obtained without a QR code. (NewsWire)
