Sri Lanka is taking steps to secure energy supplies through Russia as the Middle East conflict continues to disrupt global fuel markets, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said following discussions with visiting Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin.

Minister Jayakody said Sri Lanka is pursuing all possible measures to address the emerging energy challenges caused by the Middle East war, including efforts to obtain energy supplies through Russia, which he described as a close friendly nation.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin arrived in Sri Lanka today (26) for discussions aimed at strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries.

The Minister noted that Russia remains one of the world’s leading energy producers and, with the easing of international sanctions, presents significant opportunities for Sri Lanka to secure stable fuel supplies.

He also said Russia is viewed as a supplier less likely to face disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict, making the partnership particularly important at a time when global supply chains are under pressure.

Minister Jayakody said discussions focused on obtaining Russian support to address the current fuel challenges and on strengthening long-term energy cooperation between Sri Lanka and Russia.

He described the talks as productive and said they mark a positive step toward ensuring Sri Lanka’s energy security.

Deputy Finance and Labour Minister Prof. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Deputy Minister Arkam Ilyas, Energy Ministry Secretary Prof. Udayanga Hemapala and several other officials also attended the discussions. (Newswire)
