In a symbolic gesture aligning with global efforts to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the iconic Colombo Town Hall was illuminated in pink last evening. The striking display joined landmarks around the world in shining a light—both literally and figuratively—on one of the most pressing women’s health issues today.

At the event, Mayor of Colombo, Vraie Balthazaar, delivered a passionate address, urging citizens to come together in the fight against breast cancer. She also highlighted the upcoming TLC Triathlon 2025, organised by the Indira Cancer Trust, as a historic and community-driven effort to raise awareness and save lives.

“These are not just numbers,” the Mayor said, referring to the 15 women diagnosed and 3 lives lost daily to breast cancer in Sri Lanka. “They represent mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends whose lives were cut short. The tragedy is that many of these deaths are preventable.”

The TLC Triathlon—Touch, Look, Check—is the country’s first-ever nationwide triathlon focused on breast cancer awareness. It combines sport with health education, taking place across Kilinochchi, Batticaloa, Matara, and culminating in Colombo’s Independence Square on 26th October.

Mayor Balthazaar also reaffirmed the Colombo Municipal Council’s commitment beyond the month of October, stating that its MOH centres across the city continue to provide education, and support services year-round.
