School Development Officers have temporarily called off their hunger strike after nine days following what they described as satisfactory discussions with the President Anura Kumara Dissaanyake.
The protest, which initially began as a Satyagraha campaign, was later escalated into a “fast-unto-death” as the officers pressed for their immediate absorption into the permanent Teacher Service.
The protesting officers argue that they are already performing teaching duties in schools and should therefore be formally absorbed into the Teacher Service without further delay.
Following discussions held with the President, the School Development Officers agreed to temporarily suspend the hunger strike, pending further action and assurances on their demands. (Newswire)
