Enforced disappearances : CID takes over Lalith-Kugan probe

The investigation into the disappearances of Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department, the government said.

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament that the case had last been heard at the Malakkam Magistrate’s Court in 2014.

Stating that no progress bad been reported in the investigation, the Minister said that the Officer in Charge of the Achchuveli Police station had reported facts to court on 17 occasions.

Acting Inspector General of Police on June 3, 2025 had inquired the Achchuveli Police and Jaffna Division crime authorities on the progress of the case. Accordingly, all files related to the case had been sent to the Criminal Investigation Department on June 11, 2025, Wijepala said.

The investigation will now be handled by the Homicide and Organized Crime Investigation Unit of the CID, the Minister said.

Minister Wijepala was responding to a question raised in Parliament by Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice, and Civil Protection MP Najith Indika.

Indika raised the post-war disappearances of Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan as well as the progress of investigations into other post-war disappearances in the Northern and Eastern provinces. (Newswire)
