A woman has been arrested in Gampaha on charges of failing to heed the orders of traffic Police, obstructing the duties of officers, and falsely claiming she was the sister of a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG).
According to the Police, video footage of the woman engaging in a verbal argument with two traffic Police officers is currently being circulated on social media.
The video portrays the woman, claiming to be the sister of a high-ranking police officer of the Sri Lanka Police, obstructing Police duties by refusing to comply with a request from traffic police officers who had stopped a car.
The Police said the incident featured in the video occurred on Friday (31) in the Kotugoda, Udugampola area in the Gampaha Police Division.
Issuing a clarification on the incident, the Police said the woman driving a car was requested to pull over by traffic police officers, but she did not comply and drove away. The traffic police officers subsequently stopped the car at the Udugampola Junction and were conducting checks when the video was recorded.
Subsequently, from the location where the incident initially occurred, the woman had driven the vehicle forward, disregarding police instructions, and the car was stopped again at the Minuwangoda Police Junction. The woman was then arrested at that point and produced before the Gampaha Police Station.
The Police further said that the woman’s claims that she was the sister of a high-ranking officer of the Sri Lanka Police, are completely false and baseless, and no such relationship has been verified.
Accordingly, she is scheduled to be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court today (01), to be charged for dangerous driving, negligent driving, disobeying police instructions, and obstructing a public servant from performing their duties. (Newswire)
