The Court of Appeal has ordered that all interim petitions filed in support of the writ petition submitted by former State Intelligence Service Chief Suresh Sallay, against being taken into custody and detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in connection with the investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, be called on July 17.

Venerable Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Convener of the National Organizations Collective, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, and several other parties have submitted these interim petitions.

These petitions were taken up today (10) before Court of Appeal President Judge Rohantha Abeysooriya and Judge Priyantha Fernando.

At the hearing, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath, appearing for the respondents, told the court that such interim petitions can only be considered if the court issues notice regarding the main petition.

Meanwhile, the President’s Counsels appearing for the interim petitioners argued that this case has already drawn intense public attention and requested permission to intervene and make submissions.

However, Court of Appeal President Judge Rohantha Abeysooriya stated that consideration of these interim applications could only take place after submissions on behalf of the petitioner are concluded by President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena. (Newswire)
