
The Department of Meteorology has warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces after 2 p.m.
The department said temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers.
The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage and ensure safety during lightning activity.
The Department of Meteorology advised the public to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking cover under trees.
People are also advised to avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thundershowers.
The department further warned against using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms, and to avoid traveling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
The public has also been cautioned to be vigilant of fallen trees and downed power lines.
