The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday (26) for a Rs. 160 million water treatment plant in Medawela, Uva Paranagama, aimed at improving access to clean drinking water for more than 5,200 families in the area.
The project, funded entirely by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), will establish a fully equipped water treatment system with a capacity to treat 2,000 cubic meters of water a day.
The project will cover Medawela, Dawuldena, Karagaha Ulpatha and Katagoda, providing direct benefits to about 5,292 consumers, according to officials.
The treatment facility will include aeration, coagulation and sedimentation units, rapid sand filters, a chemical and administrative building, backwashing facilities and a water pumping station.
Officials said the project is expected to address long-standing drinking water difficulties in the Uva Paranagama area and provide residents with a safe, reliable and quality water supply.
Uva Provincial Gov. Kapila Jayasekara, Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Vidyaratne, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Susil Ranasinghe, Badulla District MP Ravindra Bandara and Uva Paranagama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Dinadasa Ratnayake were among those present at the foundation-laying ceremony, along with NWSDB officials, public representatives and residents.
