The Ministry of Defence has taken steps to address urgent concerns regarding Sri Lankan retired military personnel who have been recruited into the Ukraine-Russia conflict, including those reported missing, injured, or killed.
At a special discussion held on May 30, Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha instructed officials to gather accurate data on Sri Lankan ex-servicemen involved in the war, including those believed to be prisoners of war. He also requested the Director General of the Pensions Department to explore the possibility of a dedicated pension or financial assistance scheme for affected individuals and their families.
The meeting also addressed long-standing issues related to the pensions of retired war veterans and the Widows and Orphans Pension (W\&OP) scheme for the families of fallen heroes.
The Defence Secretary emphasized the need for prompt action and directed relevant departments to continue supporting retired and disabled military personnel. Similar issues were raised during the Public Day sessions held on May 28 and 30.
Senior Defence Ministry officials, Tri-Forces officers, and family members of Sri Lankans involved in the conflict also attended the meeting. (Newswire)
