Parliament to take up Personal Data Protection Bill next week

Parliament is scheduled to convene from 21 to 24 October, per a decision taken during a recent meeting of the Parliamentary Business Committee, chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne.

Accordingly, on each sitting day, the time from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. will be allocated for parliamentary business listed under Standing Order 22, items 1 to 6. From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., time will be reserved for questions requiring oral answers, followed by questions under Standing Order 27(2) from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Parliament will debate the regulations published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2446/34 under the National Medicines Regulatory Authority Act. Thereafter, around 5:00 p.m., the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill, which has already completed its second reading, will be considered at the committee stage and taken up for its third reading.

From 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Parliament will debate a motion to adjourn brought forward by the opposition.

On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Parliament will debate the regulations published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2451/10 under the Special Commodity Levy Act and the Excise Duty Orders under the Excise Ordinance (Authority 52).

From 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Parliament will debate a motion to adjourn brought forward by the government.

On Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Parliament will debate a motion to adjourn brought forward by the government regarding the “National Programme for the Eradication of Drugs and Organized Crime and Strengthening the Legal Framework.”

On Friday, October 24, 2025, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., time will be allocated for presenting condolence motions in honour of deceased former Members of Parliament.

Accordingly, condolence motions will be presented for the late Lohan Ratwatte, Heenmahatmaya Liyanage, Dixon J. Perera, Mervyn D. de Silva, Y.G. Padmasiri, R.M.R. Chula Bandara, and Manikavasagar Kanagasabapathy Elaventhan.

From 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Parliament will conclude with a debate on a motion to adjourn brought forward by the opposition. (Newswire)
