Sri Lanka Test captain Kusal Mendis has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to perform on green pitches in Pakistan, saying the experience of senior batters and the balance of the squad will be crucial in the upcoming Test series.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of the opening Test, Mendis said Sri Lanka’s batting lineup was well-equipped to handle challenging conditions despite expectations of a pace-friendly surface.

“I have no doubt in my batting lineup,” Mendis said, pointing to the experience of senior players Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva.

He said Sri Lankan batters were familiar with playing on green pitches and had previously performed well in similar conditions in England.

Mendis, who is preparing to captain Sri Lanka in Test cricket, said leading the side in the longest format would be a different challenge compared to One-Day Internationals and T20 cricket.

He expressed his happiness at taking on the responsibility, describing Test cricket as a format that most players enjoy.

The Sri Lankan captain also highlighted the team’s preparation, noting that the players had been in Pakistan for more than a month.

He acknowledged that spending an extended period largely confined to hotels and training facilities had been challenging but said the players had maintained a positive environment through team activities and individual preparations.

Mendis said Sri Lanka had developed specific plans for the Test series and stressed the importance of adapting to the conditions.

Commenting on the team’s strengths, he expressed confidence in both the batting and bowling departments.

He said Sri Lanka possessed a well-balanced bowling attack, with experienced players who had competed extensively in first-class and international cricket.

Mendis also praised the performances of the team’s fast bowlers during recent tours and limited-overs matches, adding that the entire squad was ready for the opening Test.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan captain expressed appreciation for the hospitality and security arrangements provided during the team’s stay in Pakistan. (Newswire)
