Warning issued for strong winds and rough seas around the island

The Department of Meteorology has issued a strong wind and rough sea warning valid until 10.30 a.m. on 8 June 2026, advising naval and fishing communities to avoid venturing into affected sea areas until further notice.

According to the Marine Meteorological Division, sea areas extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times, with strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph.

Sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu, as well as from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, are also expected to be rough at times with winds of 50–60 kmph.

The department said wave heights could increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in sea areas stretching from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Authorities have classified the risk level as very high in the affected regions and urged fishing and naval communities to remain vigilant and follow future updates issued by the Department of Meteorology. (NewsWire)
