Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath, held a telephone conversation Friday with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto, according to a statement released on social media.
While the statement did not disclose specific details of the discussion, the call occurs during a period of intense geopolitical instability following the recent arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces.
Sri Lanka has previously expressed concern over the situation in Venezuela, with Herath labeling the detention of a sitting head of state a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for a peaceful resolution and the protection of Venezuela’s national sovereignty. (Newswire)
