Severe rainfall recorded in several parts of Sri Lanka as extreme weather continues
Sri Lanka has recorded exceptionally high rainfall in multiple areas over the past 24 hours, reflecting the intensity of the prevailing severe weather conditions affecting the island.
According to data issued by the Department of Meteorology, the highest rainfall was recorded in Cheddikulam in the Vavuniya district with 315 mm, followed by Alapalli in Mullaitivu with 305 mm. Kandy reported 223.9 mm of rain, while Madu in the Mannar district recorded 218.5 mm. Other notable figures include Madampe in Ratnapura with 208 mm, Anuradhapura with 203.6 mm and Trincomalee with 201 mm.
Meteorologists warn that such intense rainfall significantly increases the risk of flooding, landslides and damage to property, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone areas.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow instructions issued by disaster management officials as severe weather is expected to continue over the next few days. (Newswire)
