Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after scans confirmed a hamstring injury.
Newswire learns that the Sri Lanka spinner has suffered a left hamstring injury requiring several weeks of rehabilitation, effectively ruling him out of the remainder of the tournament.
Hasaranga sustained the injury during Sri Lanka’s opening T20 World Cup match against Ireland, dealing a major blow to the co-hosts’ title hopes. He is regarded as a key all-rounder and the team’s primary strike bowler.
Hasaranga is also the second-highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history with 40 wickets and will now have to wait until another World Cup to add to that tally.
Sources added that leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha is expected to be drafted into the squad as Hasaranga’s replacement, subject to formal approval.
Sri Lanka Cricket and the International Cricket Council had not issued an official statement at the time of reporting. (Newswire)
