Northeast monsoon : Rain expected in several provinces today

The Northeast monsoon conditions have established over Sri Lanka, leading to rain in several provinces today.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, Southern and Uva provinces. 

Heavy falls of 100 mm or more are likely at some places in the Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces. Fairly heavy falls of about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Central and Uva provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other areas of the island after 1.00 pm. Fairly heavy falls of about 75 mm are likely in some places in these areas.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee district and the Eastern slopes of the central hills.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Batticaloa via Mannar, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly. Wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalutara to Trincomalee via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai.
