The government is prepared to hold a referendum if the Supreme Court determines that a referendum, in addition to a two-thirds majority in Parliament, is required to pass the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Speaking at a public gathering, Jayatissa said the government was prepared to proceed with either parliamentary approval or a referendum, depending on the Supreme Court’s determination, which is expected by late September or October.
He said the proposed amendment had been introduced entirely in the public interest and stressed that the government would continue with the reform process initiated on behalf of the people.
“If a two-thirds majority in Parliament is required, we are prepared to proceed accordingly, and if a referendum is required, we are prepared for that as well, based on the Supreme Court’s decision,” Jayatissa said. (Newswire)
