Sri Lanka has begun discussions with Russia to secure fuel supplies as concerns grow over disruptions to global energy supply chains due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath held an urgent meeting today (13) with Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Levan S. Dzhagaryan at the Foreign Ministry to discuss the possibility of purchasing Russian oil.
The discussions come following the removal of sanctions that had previously restricted the purchase of Russian oil, allowing Sri Lanka to explore the option as part of efforts to ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply.
During the meeting, the Minister discussed obtaining Russian fuel as an additional measure to maintain Sri Lanka’s continuous fuel supply.
Ambassador Dzhagaryan agreed to immediately convey Sri Lanka’s request to the Russian government and pledged to coordinate with relevant institutions to facilitate the necessary arrangements.
He also noted that Russia would be ready to assist Sri Lanka whenever required.
Deputy Minister of Labour, Finance and Economic Development Anil Jayantha, Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation D. J. Rajakaruna, along with ministry secretaries and officials, were also present at the discussion. (Newswire)
