Sri Lanka has entered a new era in aviation and innovation with the design, development, and manufacturing of its first-ever eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft, created entirely within the country.

In a statement on Facebook, Dr. Harsha Subasinghe CEO of CodeGen International, said the project team is currently fine-tuning and validating the platform with a 100 kg payload, testing each system step by step to ensure absolute safety before human carriage.

He further said that the aircraft is being developed to operate fully autonomously, prioritizing reliability over speed or publicity.

“Unlike imitation or assembly projects, this initiative represents original engineering made in Sri Lanka. The aircraft promises affordable air mobility, with projected flying costs under Rs. 40 per kilometer per person (approximately USD 0.13/km), making aerial transport practical rather than a luxury. It is also designed for rapid recharging in under 45 minutes, enabling high utilization and commercial viability,” Harsha Subasinghe added.

The breakthrough demonstrates that world-class aviation technology can be achieved at local cost, challenging the notion that such innovation belongs only to billion-dollar nations. (Newswire)
