The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced an islandwide trade union action from 8.00 a.m. on Monday (August 25).
The decision was taken at the GMOA’s Executive Committee meeting held on August 21, citing what it called corrupt, arbitrary, and inefficient practices by Health Ministry officials who have disrupted the medical officers’ transfer process, while disregarding directives issued by the Minister of Health.
The GMOA said that despite agreements reached with the Health Minister, those undertakings were not implemented, prompting the union to resort to strike action.
Meanwhile, the Association charged that forged documents are being circulated on social media using its official name, letterhead, emblem, and the Secretary’s name and signature. It said these false documents claim that the doctors’ strike is being carried out in support of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The GMOA alleged that a government-affiliated doctors’ trade union was actively involved in spreading such fake propaganda.
The Association stressed that this was not the first time such attempts had been made, and said complaints had already been lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department in previous cases. It added that legal and judicial action will be taken regarding the latest incident. (Newswire)
