The United National Party (UNP) has issued a statement condemning the killing of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife, warning that the incident poses a serious threat to the rule of law and the integrity of Sri Lanka’s legal system.

In the statement, the UNP said the broad daylight shooting on Feb. 13 would have a significant adverse impact on law and order, which it described as already weakened by a series of recent killings.

The party drew parallels with incidents in other countries where attacks and threats against legal professionals have undermined the justice system.

The UNP also raised concerns over the handling of the investigation, alleging politicization within the Police Department and questioning the ability of authorities to conduct an impartial probe.

Calling for immediate action, the party urged the resignation of the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, the appointment of an appropriate investigative team in consultation with the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, and administrative or legislative measures to implement protections outlined in the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer.

The UNP said it would support efforts to ensure adequate protection for lawyers in Sri Lanka.
