Four including Dutch national killed in separate road accidents

Four people, including a Dutch national, were killed in four separate road accidents reported yesterday (Feb. 19) in the Theldeniya, Padiyatalawa, Welipenna and Bandaragama police areas, police said.

In Moragahamula along the Kandy–Padiyatalawa road, a motorcycle attempting to overtake a bus traveling in the same direction collided with an oncoming bus. The injured motorcyclist was admitted to Theldeniya Hospital, where he later died. Police identified the victim as a 46-year-old Dutch national.

In a separate incident in the Kehelulla area of Padiyatalawa, a tipper truck veered off the road and overturned into a canal after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The 25-year-old driver, a resident of Padiyatalawa, succumbed to his injuries after being transferred from Padiyatalawa Hospital to Mahiyanganaya Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, in the Welipenna police area, a heavy lifting vehicle operating within a port premises collided with a motorcycle traveling in the same direction. The pillion rider of the motorcycle was admitted to the National Hospital of Colombo, where he later died. The victim was a 40-year-old resident of Ridigama.

In Bandaragama town along the Bandaragama–Panadura road, a lorry traveling toward Horana struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road. The 65-year-old victim, a resident of Bandaragama, died while receiving treatment at Panadura Hospital after being transferred from Bandaragama Hospital.

The lorry driver has been arrested, and Bandaragama Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire)
