Iran’s army says that 104 personnel were killed and 32 others wounded when a United States submarine attacked and sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean last week, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.

The frigate was torpedoed on March 4 during the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States. Iranian authorities said the vessel was struck by a U.S. submarine while operating in waters off Sri Lanka.

The IRIS Dena had been returning from naval drills in India when it was attacked and sank in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka’s southern coast.

Sri Lankan authorities earlier said around 180 personnel were believed to have been on board the vessel. Following a distress call, the Sri Lanka Navy launched a rescue operation and brought several survivors to shore for treatment.

The incident marked a major escalation in the widening conflict involving Iran, the United States and its allies in the region.

Iran has condemned the attack and warned of consequences, while tensions in the region continue to rise amid ongoing military exchanges.  (Newswire)
