Afghanistan have climbed to sixth place in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, overtaking Sri Lanka to achieve their highest-ever position in the 50-over format.

The latest rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) place Sri Lanka seventh, with both teams on 94 rating points. Afghanistan are now also ranked above England, Bangladesh and the West Indies.

Afghanistan’s rise follows an impressive run of performances, including a 4-0 ODI series victory over Ireland and an unbeaten campaign in the recently concluded tri-series involving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

Since making their ODI debut in 2009, Afghanistan have won 96 of their 191 matches, recording a win-loss ratio of 1.09.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s drop to seventh marks a setback for the former world champions, who climbed as high as fourth in 2025 following a strong run of ODI performances, including notable home series victories.

Despite the latest rankings setback, Sri Lanka’s place at the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup remains secure.

The ICC has already confirmed automatic qualification for the tournament based on the ODI rankings at the September 30, 2026 cut-off, alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. Therefore, Sri Lanka’s latest ranking decline will not affect their qualification.

India remain at the top of the ODI rankings, followed by New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Australia.
