Seven Buddhist monks, including two foreign nationals, were killed in a tragic accident last night (24) at the Na Uyana Aranya Senasanaya in Malsiripura when a cable car carrying them plunged during transit.
Police said 13 monks were travelling in the car at the time of the accident. The victims’ bodies have been placed at the Gokarella District Hospital and the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. The foreign monks’ remains are being kept at Gokarella Hospital, while the others are at Kurunegala.
Several monks were seriously injured and have been admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. (Newswire)
