PM visits flood-affected families in Bomiriya & Kolonnawa

Following the nationwide impact of Cyclone Ditwa and the overflow of the Kelani River which caused severe flooding in Colombo, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya visited the flood-affected residents of Upper Bomiriya and surrounding areas this afternoon (29) to assess their situation.

At the Bomiriya Junior School, where displaced families are temporarily sheltered, the Prime Minister met with the affected people and inquired into their wellbeing.

She examined the shortages currently faced by the displaced, including food and sanitation supplies, and reviewed the government’s relief measures to ensure these needs are met swiftly. Acknowledging the scale of the national disaster, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all those working tirelessly to provide relief and protection for the displaced communities.

She also urged political authorities and officials to promptly identify and provide for the needs of displaced and disaster-affected people.

At present, around 100 families, approximately 320 individuals, displaced by flooding in Upper Bomiriya and nearby areas are sheltered at Bomiriya Junior School. Parliamentarian Asitha Niroshan, together with municipal councillors, was actively engaged in coordinating relief efforts for these families.

Later, the Prime Minister visited Kolonnawa to inspect the disaster situation there. She observed conditions at the safe shelters established at Mulleriyawa Galwana Purana Rajamaha Vihara and Wellampitiya Vidyawardhana School.

At the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat, the Prime Minister reviewed the government’s relief programs for flood victims, including the rapid provision of food and sanitation supplies.

Deputy Ministers Eranga Gunasekara and Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Parliamentarian S.M. Marikkar, the Colombo District Secretary, the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretary, the Mayor, and other government officials also participated in these visits. (Newswire)
