The Sri Lanka Navy facilitated an emergency medical evacuation of a crew member from a Chinese-flagged vessel following a distress call received on 27 March, the Navy said.

According to the Navy, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo received an urgent alert regarding a crew member’s medical condition while the vessel was transiting about 700 nautical miles within Sri Lanka’s Search and Rescue Region.

Following the alert, the Navy coordinated the vessel’s approach towards the Offshore Patrol Limits (OPL) off Galle, while also providing initial medical advice to the ship’s crew.

A naval craft from the Southern Naval Command was subsequently dispatched to evacuate the patient.

The crew member was brought ashore on Thursday morning (27) and referred to a private hospital in Galle for treatment, with arrangements coordinated by the Navy and the vessel’s local agent.

The Sri Lanka Navy said it continues to remain on constant vigil, coordinating with MRCC Colombo to provide assistance to maritime and fishing communities in distress within Sri Lanka’s Search and Rescue Region. (Newswire)
