Defence Ministry reviews progress on Pettah Bus Terminal renovation

A high-level progress review meeting on the renovation of the Pettah Bus Terminal was held on Feb. 3 at the Ministry of Defence, chaired by Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd).

The meeting focused on the renovation project being executed by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), which aims to enhance passenger facilities, improve operational efficiency, and establish a safer, cleaner, and more commuter-friendly environment at the central Colombo terminal.

Secretary Thuyacontha highlighted the importance of maintaining construction quality, adhering to timelines, and ensuring compliance with engineering, safety, and environmental standards. He also noted of the terminal’s strategic role as a key transport hub and stressed the need to minimize service disruptions during ongoing works.

H directed all implementing agencies to strengthen coordination, address operational issues promptly, and ensure the project is completed efficiently and without compromising standards.

SLAF Director General of Construction Engineering, Air Vice Marshal Vajira Senadeera, delivered a technical briefing covering the project’s scope, progress to date, current completion status, and upcoming phases. He outlined measures taken to uphold construction quality and mitigate delays.

Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar commended the initiative, describing it as a vital development for the city’s transport infrastructure. She said the project, once completed on schedule, would improve mobility, efficiency, and the overall experience for commuters.

The renovation is part of the national Clean Sri Lanka programme, which targets urban infrastructure development while promoting environmental cleanliness and sustainability. The project includes improved utilities, upgraded waste management systems, enhanced lighting and ventilation, and modern design features.

Upon completion, the renovated Colombo Central Bus Terminal is expected to reduce congestion, improve passenger accessibility and comfort, and boost the overall reliability of public transportation services.

The meeting was attended by Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, SLTB Chairman, DIG of the Colombo Range, senior officials from the Road Development Authority, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Ministry of Transport and Highways, Ministry of Digital Economy, Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, Sri Lanka Telecom, and the Ceylon Electricity Board.
