T20 World Cup: Bangladesh Matches in India Face Doubt, Sri Lanka on Standby

Questions have emerged over whether Bangladesh will play their scheduled matches in India during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 amid speculation that venues could be shifted following recent developments involving the Indian cricket authorities.

The discussion follows comments attributed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which instructed IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the 2026 season, citing unspecified “recent developments.” The decision has fuelled speculation on social media and cricket forums about broader implications for Bangladesh’s participation in India-hosted matches.

Under the provisional World Cup schedule, Bangladesh are set to play three group-stage matches at Eden Gardens — against West Indies on February 7, Italy on February 9 and England on February 14 — before facing Nepal on February 17 at Wankhede Stadium.

However, unverified reports suggest Bangladesh’s fixtures could be moved to other Indian venues or potentially relocated to Sri Lanka, depending on how the situation evolves. No official confirmation has been issued by the International Cricket Council or the Board of Control for Cricket in India regarding any change to venues.

Cricket officials familiar with tournament planning say schedules and venues for major ICC events remain subject to review until final operational clearances are completed, particularly when political, security or logistical considerations arise.

Neither the ICC nor the Bangladesh Cricket Board has publicly commented on the speculation. Tournament organisers have previously maintained that all teams are expected to play at designated venues unless extraordinary circumstances require adjustments.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is set to be jointly staged in India and Sri Lanka, with several marquee matches scheduled at major Indian venues including Kolkata and Mumbai. (Newswire)
