Special statement issued by the VIII Executive President Ranil Wickremesinghe
Several media outlets have drawn my attention to the situation in Kathmandu, Nepal and have inquired about it.
First of all, I condemn all kinds of killings, including those of the youth that has occurred in Nepal.
Similarly, the burning of the former Prime Minister’s house and the killing of the former Prime Minister’s wife is an extremely sad situation. I express my condolences over that murder. Also, the attacks on ministers, especially the Foreign Minister, are a further extension of the tragedy that has occurred. Women’s rights were severely violated. Such actions have brought about a stain on the reputation of Nepal.
The situation in Kathmandu should not have gone this far. The shooting by the police was an unacceptable course of action. Sources stated that the situation that arose could have been controlled without firing a shot on the first day itself.
The potential for such incidents is also a dangerous situation. The opportunity that American owned Social Media companies like Google, Facebook, and YouTube have presented to overthrow governments in countries around the world cannot be underestimated.
Nepal has had a number of problems for a long time. The government did not pay attention to them. Everyone was focused on day-to-day politics according to the South Asian tradition, without finding solutions to the acute problems. This has caused great frustration among the younger generation. Meanwhile, the crisis erupted due to the complete ban on social media without addressing them.
Parliament and court buildings are considered democratic institutions in the country, and are not defined by the people who are inside them. Burning down the parliament and the court is a great disrespect to Nepal’s democracy.
However, in the end, what was left was a Nepal without a constitution. It is the responsibility of the military that took power to establish peace in the country and hold elections according to the constitution.
Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha, is a unique country for Sri Lanka. Such barbaric acts cannot be tolerated in such a country. It is possible to think that the incompetence shown in state governance has also led to this situation.
The Buddha preached to gather in harmony, discuss in harmony, and disperse in harmony. Ihope that the current government in Nepal will take the “සප්ත අපරිහානී ධර්මය” preached bythe Buddha as a model.
