The telecommunications levy will be increased from the existing 11.25% to 15% with effect from midnight today, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) announced.

The Prime Minister’s Office had earlier announced that the said tax will be increased to boost government revenue.

Mobile service providers have already taken steps to increase the monthly connection fee starting from tomorrow, while pre-paid users will get a reduced amount of data and call times for the amounts they reload.

Mobile phone charges will further increase due to the Value-Added Tax (VAT) also having been increased from 8% to 12%. (NewsWire)
