BASL slams President AKD over ‘applaud’ remark on pending court ruling

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed “grave concern” over remarks made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding a pending judicial decision, warning that such comments could undermine public confidence in the judiciary.

In a statement issued yesterday, the BASL referred to remarks made by the President at a recent May Day rally about a court ruling due on May 25, 2026, where he stated that the public would be able to applaud the decision once it is delivered.

The BASL said the nature of the statement is open to the suggestion of interference with the judicial process and cautioned that such remarks may erode trust in the independence of the judiciary.

Highlighting constitutional safeguards, the Association noted that judicial independence is a fundamental principle that ensures justice is delivered without fear or favour. It also cited provisions that prohibit external influence over judges and judicial officers.

The BASL reiterated that it has consistently opposed any threats to judicial independence, whether from the executive or any other source.

Reaffirming its position, the BASL said it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the judiciary and will take necessary steps to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the Constitution. (Newswire)
