Sri Lanka Police has called for greater public attention to the safety and wellbeing of elderly parents and individuals living alone, warning that they are increasingly vulnerable to crime and other risks.
In a statement issued, the police said incidents involving elderly persons living in isolation have become a growing concern, particularly as many of their children have migrated overseas for employment, settled abroad, or relocated to other parts of the country.
It was noted that isolated residences are often targeted by criminals, including drug addicts seeking money, jewellery and other valuables. Investigations into recent incidents have shown that some such crimes have escalated into violent attacks and even murder.
The public has been advised to ensure that homes of elderly persons are adequately illuminated at night, avoid allowing unknown individuals into residences, and maintain regular communication with neighbours to enhance safety and support.
Police also urged families to inform Grama Niladhari officers and Community Policing Committees about elderly persons living alone, provide them with easy-to-use mobile phones containing important contact numbers, and prominently display emergency contact details inside their homes.
In addition, those employing caregivers or domestic assistants to look after elderly persons have been advised to carefully verify their backgrounds and obtain police clearance reports before engaging their services.
Sri Lanka Police further urged the public to remain attentive to the wellbeing of elderly family members and take proactive measures to identify and prevent potential threats before they occur. (Newswire)
