The Sri Lanka Police have warned the public about a fraudulent message circulating on mobile phones and social media claiming recipients have been issued an overdue traffic fine.
The message, which purports to be from the Sri Lanka Police Department, informs recipients that they have been recorded committing a traffic offence by a “smart tracking device” and urges them to make an online payment through a suspicious website or file an appeal before a specified deadline.
The scam message also threatens additional penalties, daily late payment charges, and the inclusion of information in national driver and credit databases if payment is not made.
Police said the message is fake and was not issued by the Sri Lanka Police or any government institution.
Authorities have advised the public not to click on links contained in such messages, provide personal information, or make any payments through unverified websites.
The fraudulent message directs users to a website ending in “.cfd”, which is not an official Sri Lankan government domain. (Newswire)
