Dengue cases in Sri Lanka surge past 65,000 in 2026

Sri Lanka has reported 65,034 dengue cases so far this year, with the Western Province accounting for more than half of the total, according to the latest data from the National Dengue Control Unit.

The monthly breakdown shows a sharp rise in June with 21,539 cases, followed by 9,654 cases in July up to the 8th. Earlier months recorded 7,866 cases in January, 5,721 in February, 6,013 in March, 5,651 in April, and 8,590 in May.

By district, Gampaha (13,322 cases) and Colombo (11,347 cases) remain the hardest hit, together accounting for nearly 38% of the national total. Other high‑risk districts include Matara (4,600), Kalutara (4,354), Kandy (3,767), Galle (3,767), and Ratnapura (3,766).

Provincial data highlights the Western Province with 34,268 cases (52.69%), followed by the Southern Province with 12,071 cases (18.57%), and Sabaragamuwa with 5,515 cases (8.48%).

Health authorities report 45 dengue‑related deaths this year, with a case fatality rate of 0.07%. 

Week 27 surveillance identified 175 high‑risk MOH areas, with an average of 2,677 new cases per week. (Newswire)
