The Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court has imposed the highest fine in a single day, amounting to Rs. 2.1 million, on 84 locations found with dengue mosquito larvae in four Public Health Inspector (PHI) divisions under the Maharagama Medical Officer of Health office.
According to state newspaper Dinamina, the fines were levied on 65 houses, 18 business establishments, and one religious institution located in the PHI divisions of Godigamuwa, Pannipitiya, Nawinna, and Wattagedara.
The penalties followed inspections carried out between July 3 and 9, during which nearly 4,200 sites were checked amid a severe dengue outbreak in the area. Of these, 84 sites were identified with mosquito larvae, and each was fined Rs. 25,000, bringing the total to Rs. 2.1 million.
Health authorities noted that this marks the largest fine imposed by the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court in a single day.
In addition, final notices were issued to 175 locations, warning that if corrective measures are not taken within three days, legal action will also be filed against those sites. (Newswire)
