
Sri Lanka’s dengue crisis has intensified, with the official death toll climbing to 50 by July 16, marking a case fatality rate of 0.07%.
The National Dengue Control Unit reports that total infections this year have surged to 73,455, underscoring the scale of the outbreak.
The Western Province remains the epicenter, accounting for more than half of all cases (38,700), with Gampaha (15,341) and Colombo (14,625) districts hardest hit. The Southern Province follows with 11,382 cases, while Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces each report over 6,000 infections.
Monthly data shows a sharp escalation in recent weeks: June recorded 21,538 cases, while July has already added 18,076. Earlier months saw lower figures, with May at 8,590 and April at 5,651.
Authorities have flagged 175 MOH areas as high‑risk during Week 27, with an average of 2,677 new cases reported daily. (Newswire)
