The Sri Lanka Navy has commended 14 civilians who helped rescue 11 naval personnel after a Fast Attack Craft ran into distress off the west coast.

Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Damian Fernando presented letters of appreciation to the civilians from Angulana, recognising their swift intervention following the incident involving Fast Attack Craft P 4447 on August 15.

The Navy said the civilians had risked their own safety amid rough sea conditions to assist the sailors during the emergency.

The letters of appreciation were presented at the Western Naval Command Headquarters in Colombo on August 18.

Vice Admiral Fernando expressed the Navy’s gratitude for what he described as an important act of civic responsibility and humanitarian assistance, saying their prompt response contributed to the successful rescue operation.

Commander Western Naval Area Rear Admiral Jagath Kumara and other senior and junior naval officers were also present. (Newswire)
