MP Mano Ganesan has questioned what he described as unease among government legislators over a planned briefing by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at the parliamentary complex on legal concerns surrounding the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

In a post on X, Ganesan said government members appeared “unusually restless” about the proposed briefing and argued that their reaction could create an impression of a “guilty mindset.”

Ganesan stressed that attendance at the briefing was voluntary and that neither Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa nor anyone else could compel MPs to participate.

“It is simply a good-faith invitation. Every MP is free to attend or not,” Ganesan said, adding that he planned to attend with “like-minded colleagues.”

He also questioned why there was concern over MPs hearing the legal issues raised in relation to the proposed constitutional amendment.

Ganesan’s comments came amid discussion over the BASL briefing for parliamentarians on legal concerns surrounding the proposed 22nd Amendment.

The BASL meanwhile has requested the postponement of the briefing, citing the government’s position in Parliament and the absence of bipartisan consensus. (Newswire)
