Construction of the new Mahaiyawa pedestrian and vehicle underpass in Kandy is approximately 80% complete, with authorities aiming to open it to the public before December 2026.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake inspected the final phase of construction on September 20 and held discussions with project officials and engineers on accelerating the remaining work.
The Rs. 650 million project, located along the Kandy-Jaffna main road, features a 31.7-meter-long, 21-meter-wide and 6.15-meter-high underpass.
The project is intended to ease traffic congestion in Kandy and improve travel for daily commuters and motorists heading toward Wattegama, Matale, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Jaffna. (Newswire)
