The government has introduced new standardisation and quality control requirements for imported passenger car tyres and pneumatic tyres used in three-wheeled motor vehicles, effective January 01, 2027.

The regulations have been issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance, under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act, No. 1 of 1969.

According to Extraordinary Gazette No. 2508/27, dated October 01, 2026, the new provisions amend the existing Standardization and Quality Control Regulations published in May 2024.

Under the amendments, two additional categories of imported vehicle tyres have been included in Schedule B of the regulations, requiring compliance with the following Sri Lanka Standards (SLS):

  • Passenger Car Tyres (HS Code 4011.10.90): SLS 1212 – Specification for Passenger Car Tyres.
  • Pneumatic Tyres for Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles (HS Code 4011.90.10): SLS 1347 – Specification for Pneumatic Tyres for Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles.

The Gazette further specifies that the new regulations will apply to goods arriving at any port or airport in Sri Lanka on or after January 01, 2027. (Newswire)
