Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, in his message marking Eid‑Ul‑Fitr, urged that the “flames of war be extinguished and the lamp of peace be lit,” reflecting on the values of Islam and the lessons imparted during the holy month of Ramadan.
Premadasa noted that the five pillars of Islam, the Declaration of Faith, daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, the payment of Zakat, and the Hajj pilgrimage, guide Muslims toward a way of life that fosters peace and harmony. He said that fasting during Ramadan teaches dedication, patience, and spiritual purity.
“At this moment, we must understand that the foremost path to resolving the turbulent climate that has emerged in the Middle East, where the majority of the world’s Muslim population resides, lies in the very values Islam prescribes: patience, compassion, unity, and humanity,” he said.
Premadasa stressed that solutions to global crises must be rooted in tolerance, compassion, and unity, rather than division and hatred.
“Power or law alone is not sufficient to resolve conflict. What is equally important is guiding the minds of people along a strong and righteous path. The true spirit of Ramadan reminds us of this strength and calls upon us to direct it towards peace and justice,” he added.
He expressed hope that noble thoughts would be kindled in the hearts of people everywhere, leading to a transformation where peace and social justice prevail. (Newswire)
