Development work on another rural road funded at Rs. 80 million commenced on Saturday under the government’s National Rural Road Development Programme in the Polgahawela electorate of the Kurunegala District.
The project involves the improvement of a 1.4-kilometre stretch of road from Dangolla Junction to Kopihena, a key route linking the Kurunegala, Polgahawela and Wariyapola electorates. Officials said the road is used daily by nearly 600 families living in surrounding villages, including Hambara, Demataluwa, Helgama–Rathmale, Piduruwella, Kohana, Dangolla, Dampitiya, Damunugala, Wehera Benda, Dematagahapelessa, Sandagala North and Sandagala South.
The road development is being carried out using direct labour under the Road Development Authority. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel distance to Kurunegala town by more than 10 kilometres, significantly improving transport efficiency, officials said.
Authorities noted that the road will also serve as an access route to the Alakoladeniya industrial zone, contributing to regional economic activity. Residents said the shorter travel time and reduced transport costs would have a positive impact on livelihoods and day-to-day mobility.
The inauguration of the project was attended by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake, National People’s Power Kurunegala District Member of Parliament Sujeewa Dissanayake, Polgahawela Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman H. A. Wimalasiri, and North Western Province Director of the Road Development Authority Atula Senadeera, along with officials and local residents. (Newswire)
