The Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar has sentenced each of the 15 people convicted in the main case relating to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks to 220 years of rigorous imprisonment.
The court also ordered the confiscation of the movable and immovable assets belonging to the convicted individuals, with effect from the commencement of their sentences.
The sentences followed the three-judge bench’s verdict finding 15 of the 24 defendants guilty over their involvement in the Easter Sunday attacks, while nine defendants were acquitted.
The Attorney General had filed 23,270 charges against the defendants, including charges relating to murder, conspiracy to commit terrorism and offences involving firearms and explosives under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
The coordinated attacks on churches and hotels on April 21, 2019, killed more than 260 people and injured hundreds.
The verdict was delivered by a three-judge Trial-at-Bar comprising High Court Judges Navaratne Marasinghe, Ramanathan Kannan and Sujeewa Nissanka. (Newswire)
